Carlo is one of the most experienced wine, beers, and spirits writers and editors in North America. He is the author of The New Single Malt Whiskey, Big Whiskey 2nd edition, The Spirit of Rye, How to Drink Whiskey, Jiggers and Drams, and Tennessee Whiskey, among other books.
Carlo is a lifelong publishing executive with more than 20-years of experience as an editor and publisher. He worked at Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, Running Press, Penguin USA, and as an Executive VP at Barnes & Noble. He has published books with Stephen Hawking, E.O. Wilson, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Dan Rather, James McPherson, Philip Caputo, Michael Lewis, Malachy McCourt, David Quammen, and David Margolick among others.
As one of the most experienced food, wine, and spirits editors in America, he published many books with Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado, The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, Esquire, and Edible Communities magazines.
His authors include Michael Jackson, Kevin Zraly, Matt Kramer, Oz Clarke, Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jensen, Tom Stevenson, Josh M. Bernstein, Stephen Beaumont, Ben McFarland, Clay Risen, Jim Meehan, Salvatore Calabrase, William Dowd, Jennifer Simonetti-Bryant, and many others. His books and authors over the years have won James Beard, Gourmand, and IAACP awards. He has traveled to wine regions in California, Canada, up and down the east coast, France, Spain and Chile.
He has visited more than 300 wineries, breweries, and distilleries across the United States. And he owned the Hudson-Chatham Winery from 2006 to 2020, which was named winery of the year in the Hudson Valley in 2019. Originally a winemaker, his wines earned scores in the 90s from several publications including Wine Enthusiast.
He had been featured in Forbes, The Wall Stret Journal, Edible Brooklyn, Edible Manhattan, Edible Hudson Valley, and Hudson Valley magazine. He is also the winner of the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Writer’s Guild Michael Birchenall Award, for his writings on the wines of the East Coast wine industry.
In 2014, he edited and wrote the celebrated The New Single Malt Whiskey. A string of whiskey books followed. He was featured, along with Clay Risen, in the documentary, Fire, Water & Grain: The Story of Empire Rye. His whiskey books have sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide.
As a winemaker, Carlo participated in several collaboration projects, making gin, grappa, and finishing whiskey and applejack in his winery’s barrels.
