Better known for his involvement in the Cotton Club, legendary New York mobster Owney Madden and his associates, including Big Bill Dwyer and George "Frenchy" DeMange, allegedly helped stake Sherman Billingsley to The Stork Club. Billingsley himself had been a bootlegger back in Oklahoma. After being kidnapped by Mad Dog Coll, Madden and his associates ransomed Sherman, and from therein Billingsley owned the club outright.
The Stork Club, from 1929 to 1965, went onto to become one of the most celebrated nightspots in the world. The club featured the exclusive VIP “Cub” Room that was the exclusive home of movie stars, celebrities, politicians, showgirls, wealthy elite, and aristocrats. It was the epitome of “café society”, guarded by Jack Spooner, the most famous waiter and Matrie d in New York City, who decided who got into the ‘Cub Room’ and was affectionately known as “St. Pete”.
The list was eclectic as it was electric. Popular denizens of the ‘Cub’ Room included Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, Ernest Hemingway, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Henry Fonda, Orson Wells, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Becall, Ingrid Bergman, Jayne Mansfield, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco, Ethel Merman, former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, John F. Kennedy, and many others. The club also played host to the number one radio show in America, featuring gossip columnist Walter Winchell, who broadcasted his show from Table 50. The club was so famous it even inspired a movie – The Stork Club starring Betty Hutton, Barry Fitzgerald, and Robert Benchley.
More enduring than the glamour and glitz, was its legendary bar service, led by barmen such as Nathiel Cook, Julius Corsani, and Eddie Whittmer, who invented cocktails such as “The Stork Club”, “The Champagne Cocktail Gloria Swanson”, and “The FBI” among many others.

Ingredients:
1 part Stork Club Vodka
1 part French or Italian Vermouth
Add to a pint glass filled with ice cubes. Stir.
Pour into a chilled Martini glass.
Decorate with olive and serve in cocktail glass.
"The Perfect Martini, somewhat smoother and less potent to the taste, is archived by using the same proportions of gin and vermouth, but equal parts of French and Italian vermouth are used...A vast deal of bother has from time to time been raised over the almost fanciful advantages of stirring over shaking Martinis. The almost universal custom is for stirring them, but Marco, head barman at New York's celebrated Colony Restaurant, makes a practice of shaking them vigorously and candor compels the admission that the only discernable difference between the two products is that a spooned Martini is crystal clear while a shaken one inclines to a clouded appearance. Bar practice at the Stork favors the noncontroversial stirring or spooning, but the management will oblige by having them compounded in a cement mixer or butter churn if that is what the customer wants."
